Getting Started

If you are doing this on your own…
Clearing out a loved one's home is not easy. And, there is no, single, perfect way to do it. Here are some general guidelines, whether or not you hire BERGFELD's.

Big picture – Contact the lawyer, accountant or bank officer to find out about any special instructions, circumstances or ethical issues.

Personal records - It is necessary to determine which files and paperwork must be retained. Guidelines to record keeping...

Personal property – Make a general inventory, room by room. Focus on items of special significance to you, family, friends.  Sorting through possessions...

Wish lists – Send copies of your inventory to these people. Ask them to specify items they want.

Getting things to them – UPS pricing schedules are based on your package's weight, dimensions, and method of shipping.  Go to www.ups.com and select "Calculate Time and Cost".  If you need commercial movers, get written estimates, check licenses and reputations. Buy insurance. Take dated 'before' photos of items shipped.  More suggestions for selecting a moving company...

Selling – Get written bids from a variety of dealers.  Compare them.  Request certified checks before accepted dealers remove purchased items.  Sell, consign, or auction...

Donating – Find out what charities will accept. Give them your inventory. Get itemized receipts and ask them to sign them. Use IRS form 8283, and Publication #561 (Determining Value of Donated Property) and #526 (Charitable Contributions).  Giving your possessions a 2nd life...

Cleaning up – Determine standard of cleaning required. Ask Superintendent what he or she would charge to do it. If you need outside services, get written estimates including dates.
